I don't know why I'm posting this. I've never posted anything like this before. Ten years and eight months from first harness to last, they had a retirement ceremony for my guide dog at the Philadelphia VA Medical Center. In the room where everyone wore lanyards and she got a cake made of peanut butter, they read a list of things she had done for me. I remember the mic crackling and someone’s shoes squeaking on the linoleum. They also read a letter. An acceptance letter to the dream school I never went to. Thick envelope, the good kind, that showed up one Tuesday when I was nineteen. I had worked for it for four years and only told one person I even applied. My older sister. They said she had scanned it, kept it, and sent a copy to my VA counselor before she passed. I didn’t know they even talked. I only knew I stood in the driveway back then, holding that envelope for a long time, then shoved it in a drawer and enlisted. After the ceremony, my instructor asked if I wanted to keep my dog in retirement, even though I was getting a new one. I said yes before he finished the sentence. Now my sister’s copy of that acceptance letter sits on my kitchen counter. Every Tuesday at 5pm I reach for my phone. I still reach. What would YOU do?
