I never understood why she cried at doors. Front doors, car doors, even the fridge door once. She would press her forehead to the wood or the metal and breathe like she was waiting for someone to answer. I was under the dining table when the big white envelope came that February. It slid across the hardwood, bumping my paw. Her name was on the label in blue ink. Inside was the graduation gown she never got to wear, still in the plastic wrap, tassel knotted like a leash. She held it up in front of the hallway mirror, over her old hoodie. No cap, just messy hair. Then she knelt, wrapped her arms around my neck, and whispered into my collar instead of calling her mom. Three years, two months, and nineteen days after I slipped out of the gate, I ended up back in the parking lot of the same shelter where the family first adopted me eight years ago. The asphalt smelled like wet rubber bands. I still remembered the smell of the car. I walked to their car before they called me. Her roommate came later with a paper grocery bag. Inside, the gown was still in plastic, still with the tassel attached. We still haven't opened it. Last night, they hung my old leash on the same hook as the gown.
