I think the last ordinary moment was him laughing at the turkey skin. It was Thanksgiving, a few years before the ceremony. He poked the roasting pan with a fork and said it looked like a deflated soccer ball. I remember the oven clock said 3:17, or maybe 3:19. He stood at the refrigerator for a long time that day. Seven drawings, still there. From age four to nine. She put them up back then and they stayed because nobody ever said to take them down. The crayon volcano with "mama" floating over it. The lopsided house with no doors. The flag with too many stars. He traced one corner of the paper with his thumb. Then he asked my wife if she was nervous for the oath. "Thirty years, one month, and four days," she said. He whistled, low. He did not ask about his grandmother. At the Federal Building in downtown Los Angeles, the row of plastic chairs in the naturalization ceremony room where we held hands for the first time in public had an empty chair between us. Her mother never made it. We kept that chair. On the bus home we shared one pair of earbuds and listened to a song he used to fall asleep to. Neither of us mentioned the last call he never returned. Some nights I still rearrange the drawings by height. He has his own refrigerator now. What would YOU do?
