I think the last ordinary moment was a Tuesday, because the recycling bin was still at the curb when I got home. She was on the back porch, wrapped in that gray hoodie with the broken zipper, pointing my phone at the kids while they blew bubbles. Her scarf was crooked. I straightened it. She stole my Tigers cap off my head and put it on our youngest, and everyone laughed. The hat rack by the front door rattled when the kids ran past. Eleven hats in no order. The Army hat. The fishing hat. The granddad hat my father left me. I remember thinking I should buy a new one for fall and never did. Fourteen months from diagnosis to this moment, though we only counted the first few. By the time that summer came, we pretended numbers didn’t exist. She spent long afternoons on that porch, filming the kids, then sending me inside for more lemonade. I didn’t know she was also recording video messages out there, one for every birthday, graduation, and empty side of the bed she wouldn’t see. She hid them in a folder on the family laptop and texted me the password the week before the end. Her last text also asked me not to show them to the kids until they were grown. They ask about her videos now. The hats are still on the rack. What would YOU do?
