I used to count the cracks in the brown leather. My dad’s armchair sat under the swampy living room vent, right in front of the old box fan. Brown leather, the right armrest rubbed flat and shiny, the cushion sunk where he always sat. Everyone knew it was his chair. No one needed to say it. On school mornings in Phoenix, I’d slip out before he woke up. Room 14 smelled like dry Expo markers and something sweet from the cafeteria downstairs. My teacher always had a pencil already on my desk. Sometimes lunch money, folded under it. I remember seeing $2.15 written in red on the menu once. Three years of morning pencils and lunch money left on the desk. She never said a word to me about it. She just slid a granola bar closer during silent reading, or put a clean hoodie on the back of my chair when the AC went too high. The supply closet in Room 14 was never locked on purpose. I didn’t understand why until I was grown, maybe late twenties. My dad was gone by then. The armchair was still there. I moved everything else around it. It is still there. Last month, she knocked on my apartment door and sat in that chair. She held out the crumpled field trip form with my third-grade handwriting and the word "covered" in her pen, dated years before I learned her name. What would YOU do?
