I used to joke that my mother could never say "I love you" without following it with instructions. "Did you eat?" "Lock your door." "Check your oil." Those were her versions. Four years since the diagnosis, fourteen months since she last recognized my face, she sits in the corner of the memory care common room near the window with the bird feeder. On music days, she sings every word, humming that little bridge only the two of us knew. Between songs, she looks past me like I’m a volunteer. The staff called last week. They’d found a shoebox in her old closet at home, tucked behind winter boots that still smell faintly like Pine-Sol. Inside: letters. All in her careful block handwriting. My name on every envelope. None of them stamped. There’s one about my first year in Portland, when I called her from a pay phone, shaking.
