The Acceptance Letter I Read in a Supply Closet

Category: heartwarming • Theme: 🫂 Showing Up

I could never say the words in English. People think twenty-six years is a long time to be quiet, but it goes fast when you are scrubbing other people’s coffee from their desks. I remember the first night in East L.A., maybe late summer, the motel air conditioner rattling like coins in a jar. We decided then: every dollar went to a child we did not have yet. When our son finally came, we spoke only Spanish at home. At school meetings, we nodded a lot and smiled. We did not know how to say proud, so we packed extra tamales in his lunch and left the bigger piece of chicken on his plate. At night we cleaned offices. The strip mall cleaning supply closet smelled like bleach and oranges from the air freshener someone broke once. On the middle shelf, we taped his acceptance letter to the dream school, the thick envelope he had waited for four years. He had called no one else. Just us. Twenty-six years exactly from arrival to his graduation, he walked that stage. We clapped until our hands hurt and then went to work because Tuesday is still Tuesday. Now he tells us to stop, that he can take care of us, that we have done enough. I thought we were only saving money. The account in his name was open before he was even born. What would YOU do?
