I still can’t untie the double knot on her apron. It hangs on the hook by the stove, faded yellow, stained with oil and tomato, the strings pulled tight the way she always did it. Four hours from 1am to 5am, I watched a Coke can stuck in the machine’s spiral, just spinning. A man in scrubs pants and a Falcons hoodie sat one chair away. We never spoke. When my name was called, he looked up and nodded. Later, when his name was called, I nodded back. I remember the coffee from the machine tasted like pennies. I found his folded note in my coat pocket afterward, with his apology and a phone number.
