The Barista Who Never Knew About the Letters

Category: heartwarming • Theme: 📬 Unspoken Words

I think the last ordinary moment was a Tuesday, because the trash cans were still at the curb when I drove over. Mom was at the kitchen table at 11pm after the kids were asleep, envelopes spread out, her thin blue pen from Walgreens in her hand. Three years, two months, eleven days of stage-four, and she was still writing birthday letters she knew she wouldn’t see. Children’s drawings covered the refrigerator behind her, seven of them, curling at the corners. They’d been there since we were little, and nobody ever said to take them down. I remember the hum of the old fridge and the smell of burnt popcorn from some movie night I’d missed. She asked if I’d eaten. That was all. I didn’t tell her I’d driven there from the hospital parking garage that winter night, the one where a stranger in a red OSU hoodie paid for my coffee when my card declined. He’d said, “Rough night?” and slid a five across the counter. I had been staring at the bridge outside, thinking about walking. She never knew about that bridge, or that man. I went home that night and scrubbed the grout in my shower until my fingers hurt. Last month, he came to Thanksgiving. My cousin’s new boyfriend. He stood at that same refrigerator for a long time, looking at the drawings. I watched him trace the crayon lines with his eyes. I didn’t say a word. What would YOU do?
