I found the stack when we emptied his desk, under a rubber band that had gone brittle. Birthday cards, eleven of them, I think. All in the same blue envelopes. Addressed, sealed, never mailed. Her name on every one. The woman he stopped talking to after the fight none of us really understood. I remember he used to disappear to the garage around the same week every year. I thought it was for his taxes. Three years from rescue to that floor. That’s how long it was between the day I pulled the shelter dog off the euthanasia list and the night she stood over him in our living room at 3am, barking at a pitch I had never heard. He had been about to return her that first week. She was too much. He did not return her. The paramedics said she probably saved those minutes. He woke up once in the ICU, saw her at the end of the bed, and whispered, "Good girl," with the oxygen line pulling at his nose. After he passed, I found a final unsent card in the nightstand, the price tag still on it: $3.99. I sat on the kitchen floor and peeled potatoes I didn’t cook. She is still alive, the woman on the envelopes. The story she knows about him is missing this dog, these cards, that floor. I keep meaning to drive to her house. I keep not turning left onto her street. What would YOU do?
