I think the last normal night was a Tuesday, or maybe a Thursday, because there was meatloaf and that was never for weekends. My mother hung her blue cardigan on the back of the dining chair like always, soft, slightly pilling at the elbows. She asked if I had enough, tapped her fork twice against her plate, then said she was going to her meeting. She kissed the top of my head and asked if I was warm enough. I remember the kitchen clock ticking louder than usual. The news was talking about rain again. I went back to my game. I did not know it was the last time she would leave for a meeting while I still thought they worked. Seven years without contact, two years clean, I was in the parking lot of a community center in Tacoma. The therapist had arranged the meeting. My son had asked to see me, not the other way around. I almost did not come. When my phone rang that afternoon, I almost let it go to voicemail. His aunt’s number. One phone call. The right words at the right moment. "He says he wants to see you. Today." Now I sit in my mother’s old dining chair. The blue cardigan is still there. I dial and hang up, dial and hang up, then clean the bathroom sink. How many times can a son ask first? What would YOU do?
