The Call I Made From the Parking Lot

Category: heartwarming • Theme: 🧵 Family Bonds

I still see Dad’s coffee mug every time I open the cabinet. Plain white, chipped on the lip, a faint brown ring at the bottom that never really scrubbed out. Nobody touches it. When we first came to East LA, I think the apartment still smelled like the last tenants’ fried fish and bleach. He drank from that mug every morning before the night shift, steam rising while the Spanish radio buzzed low. Mom would pack tortillas in a bread bag, and they would leave for the offices, keys jingling. They kept my first-year med school photo taped inside the strip mall cleaning supply closet, right above the mop bucket. Twenty-six years exactly from arrival to my graduation, the landlord raised the rent on the building where they still rented a small studio. They never said "proud" in any language. Every paycheck went into an account with my name on it. A few weeks ago—I’m not sure, maybe three—I called between patients, standing by the vending machine that always eats dollar bills. Dad sounded tired, like he was talking from under blankets. I just said, "Did you eat? I can come this weekend." He was quiet, then just said, "We’ll wait." Now the mug sits there, untouched. I went home last night and ironed every shirt I own. I keep replaying that call and wondering if that was their way of saying goodbye, or asking me to finally come home. What would YOU do?
