The Cat Who Comes at Six and the Words He Left

Category: heartwarming • Theme: 📬 Unspoken Words

I thought the cat belonged to the lady with the blue mailbox. He started coming to our porch three days after the funeral. Mom said he wasn’t ours. He sat under the porch swing where she drinks her evening tea alone and stared at the door like he was waiting for someone late. He comes at 6pm. He leaves when it gets too dark to see the cracked step. Nobody on our street says he’s theirs. Before, when Dad was here, they had a garden in the backyard. Same rectangle, same planting order every May. He’d be out there before breakfast, putting stakes in the ground where she liked the rows, not even asking. This year Mom planted it alone. I watched from my bedroom window. She lined the rows the same way he used to and then sat down in the dirt and pressed her hand flat on one of them. I found the envelope in her nightstand by accident, behind a pack of wintergreen gum. Her name on the front in his writing. Inside was a page about the hospital room, about how they finally said things one hour before he closed his eyes. That night I scrubbed the kitchen floor until midnight. She still hasn’t told anyone about the letter. I still haven’t told her I read it. Sometimes I think I should ask her to read it out loud. Then I think about that cat waiting at 6pm, and I stay quiet. What would YOU do?
