The Cat Who Waited at 6pm

Category: heartwarming • Theme: 📬 Unspoken Words

I started counting when he began coming to the porch. The cat shows up at 6pm. He sits under the porch swing where Mom drinks her evening tea alone, like he is clocking in. Fourteen months, starting three days after the funeral. He leaves when it gets fully dark, every time. I think it was a Tuesday when I left for college. The house smelled like Lemon Pledge and boiled peanuts. Mom hugged me quick by the car and said, "Call tomorrow, okay?" I said, "Tomorrow, for sure." Inside, the pencil marks on the kitchen doorframe were still there. Every birthday, every first day of school, everyone stood against that frame. My name, my brother's, even Dad's once, when we begged him. Now we are selling the house. I asked the realtor if we could take the doorframe. She said it was part of the house. Mom just ran her thumb over the lowest mark and went to wipe the already-clean counter. The cat still comes at 6pm and sits by Mom's ankles while she looks at the For Sale sign. She doesn't talk about Dad. She just asks the cat, "Did you eat?" and slides a saucer closer. I still know Mom's landline number by heart. The house will lose it before I do. What would YOU do?
