I found his military uniform when we were cleaning out the house, dress blues folded tight in a box under the bed. The fabric still had that dry-cleaner starch feel, even though I think it had been pressed only once after he came home and never again. Next to it was a stack of Christmas cards, all from the same woman I didn’t know. The last one said, “You saved my grandson’s life,” and mentioned Hartsfield-Jackson, Concourse C, gate C32, the bench by the window. There was a phone number, written twice, like she was afraid her hand would shake. The envelope flap smelled faintly like Ivory soap. I read backwards through the cards until the first one. She wrote about being eighty-one, first time flying alone, a layover in Atlanta to meet her new granddaughter. She said a young couple missed their own connection and stayed three hours with her so she wouldn’t walk away from the gate. The man was wearing his uniform then, she wrote. After discharge, he put those dress blues away and never spoke of what they held. Her grandson, she wrote later, became a doctor in a VA hospital. She said it started with that layover.
