I always thought the boots meant Daddy was coming back. His work boots stayed by the door, steel-toed and dirty, the left one always unlaced at the top. Mom said not to move them. That was six months ago, I think. Maybe seven. I still duck around them when I carry the mail in. The first Christmas after he was gone, a card came with no return address. Just a picture of a baby in a knitted yellow hat and a note in shaky blue ink. Mom sat down on the floor by the boots to read it. Later I heard her on the phone with Aunt Denise, saying something about "Concourse C, gate C32, the bench by the window" and "three hours" and "they missed their own plane." I didn't know Mom had ever been on a plane. I thought she was scared of the escalator at Target. She showed me the napkin once. The ink was smudged with something that smelled like airport pretzels. An address. A first name. No last name. Every year, another card. The baby on a picnic blanket. The baby with a lunchbox. The baby holding a cardboard sign that said "THANK YOU" in crooked letters. This year, I took the bus to the post office alone and mailed our envelope to that same address. I wore Daddy's left boot the whole way. No one looked down. What would YOU do?
