The Citizenship Certificate Above Our Secondhand Couch

Category: heartwarming • Theme: 📬 Unspoken Words

I look up from the overdue notice and see it again: her citizenship certificate, crooked above the thrift-store couch. The glass still has a fingerprint in the corner where she used to straighten it. I think she touched that frame every time she passed it. Now. Then. Now again. Back then, I was in my last semester at Auburn, staring at a zero balance that should have been five digits in red. The bursar’s office smelled like burnt coffee and Pine-Sol. I remember the woman behind the window saying, “Looks like an anonymous scholarship hit this morning, honey. You’re covered.” Eighteen years and four months before that, Mom was eating dinner alone in the break room at the Piggly Wiggly. She would call me on her ten-minute break, ask only, “Did you eat?” and listen to my breathing. She never mentioned the second job. Twenty-two years after she arrived, they finally printed her name right on that certificate and handed it to her in a room that felt too cold. She brought it home, framed it, and hung it over the TV like a shield. Three years after she died, it’s still there. The anonymous donor told the financial aid office they did not want contact. Now I have a raise, a little house outside Huntsville, and a boy who left his first crayon drawing of our family on my fridge. I’ve straightened that paper three times already. His hands are still small. What would YOU do?
