The Citizenship Oath, the Empty Seat, and the Thick Envelope

Category: heartwarming • Theme: 📬 Unspoken Words

I still have the envelope in the top kitchen drawer, under the takeout menus. Thick envelope, the good kind, the kind you feel before you even look at the return address. The corner is a little bent now, like it got tired of waiting. I remember when my mother and I first talked about that school. I think it was after evening prayers, when the radiators were clanking too loud in our first Minneapolis apartment. She traced the logo on a photocopied brochure with her thumb and said, "Four years. We work for four years." So I did. Four years of community college, night cleaning at the hospital, essays on the bus. I talked about that dream school with only her. By the time the envelope arrived on a Tuesday, she had been gone almost two years. Seventeen years, three months, eight days since we stepped off the bus from the immigration center. I stood in the driveway holding it for a long time before I went inside. That same envelope was in my purse yesterday, at the Hennepin County Federal Building, front row left side. The empty seat beside me was for her. Right before the oath, my old ESL teacher slipped into that seat, out of breath, holding a small Somali flag. I had not spoken to her in maybe a decade. My mother’s last wish was simple: "When you get in, you call me first." Tomorrow. I keep folding the envelope back closed. What would YOU do?
