I was in the employee break room at the depot when they handed me the cake. I had forgotten it was my work anniversary. Twenty years, they said. Maybe twenty-one. The room was full. Dispatchers, mechanics, a couple of supervisors I only ever hear on the radio. And her. She was in the only dress I had ever seen her wear that wasn’t a coat. The same woman from the 47 bus stop at Frankford and Kensington, 6:12am. Four years, approximately 1,040 mornings. Her grandson stood beside her, taller now, holding a shoebox. White canvas sneakers, size 4, the soles barely worn. She pressed the box into my hands and said, "He never forgot you." Later, at home, I put the box on my closet shelf, next to my one good suit. I still haven’t tried to untie the laces. Fifteen years earlier, I remember her getting on my bus with that same shoebox on her lap, the lid off, taking photo after photo with a flip phone. She said it was the kid’s first pair of shoes. She took forty-seven photos the day he wore them. She never asked for help with the stroller ramp. She was too proud. I memorized her stop anyway. Yesterday, after the party, I went home and scrubbed the kitchen sink with a toothbrush. Now the shoes are here, and so is their story. I just don’t know what I’m supposed to do with them.
