The Dog at Plot 34 and Her Yellow Apron

Category: heartwarming • Theme: 🐾 Animal Love

I think the last ordinary day was that Thanksgiving when the kids left early to beat the traffic and my wife wiped her hands on her apron and said, "Take him out before it rains." Her faded yellow apron hung on the hook by the back door, stained, the strings tied in a double knot the way she always did. It had hung there every evening after dinner for as long as the house had been the house. The kitchen smelled like fried okra and that lemon soap she bought on sale, three bottles for $4.99. I drove the dog to Mount Olive Cemetery, same as always. Plot 34 in the back row, every morning at 7am, even on holidays. I remember thinking my coat felt a little tight, or maybe I had just eaten too much. When my heart gave out a few weeks later, they told me he kept coming anyway. Two years, seven hundred and thirty mornings, he lay by that stone while her apron stayed on the hook. The ladies from church said he would go home with whoever brought him food, then slip away and be back by noon. Now I watch from wherever this is, and I see the new man who walks past my house, slowing at the porch. I thought he was just looking at the peeling paint. Her apron on the hook was there before he ever noticed the dog. What would YOU do?
