I first saw the dog at Plot 34 in the back row of Mount Olive Cemetery, just sitting there at 7am like he was waiting for a bus that never came. Someone said his owner had been an old man who died alone, no kids, no one, and the dog had nowhere to go. Two years, they said. Seven hundred and thirty mornings. I would pass on my way to open up the church hall, coffee in one hand, keys in the other. The dog never barked. He just lay down facing the stone, like he was guarding a door only he could see. At home, there was the worn patch on the couch from where my wife always sat. Right side of the middle cushion, paler and softer from twenty-three years of the same shoulder leaning the same way. Now nobody sits there. The indentation is gone. One morning, an older woman from church, the one who always smells like Ivory soap, knelt beside the dog and clipped on a red leash. "You don't have to stay alone," she told him. He went with her, tail low, and came back by noon anyway, lying down again like nothing changed. That night I went home and scrubbed the kitchen sink until midnight. I thought the dog was clinging to the man. Now I wonder if he was just waiting for someone to notice he was still there, the way that empty cushion keeps waiting for me. What would YOU do?
