The Dog, the Ambulance, and the Unmailed Letters

Category: heartwarming • Theme: ✨ Unexpected Kindness

I keep the shoebox on the same shelf as the dog treats now. Now. Then. Now again. The night on the living room floor at 3am, I remember the rough feel of the carpet more than the pain in my chest. She would not stop barking, circling, pressing her nose against my face. I remember thinking I should have vacuumed. Three years from rescue to that floor. Then: first week with her in my condo, I stood in the shelter parking lot seriously considering walking her back in. She pulled too hard, chewed one shoe, barked at the blender. I was never really a dog person. I said I was fine. Everyone believed me. Or I thought they did. The paramedics said a neighbor called 911 because my dog “was going nuts” against the shared wall. I do not remember the ride. I remember the plastic taste of the oxygen mask and one paramedic quietly scratching her ear. Last month, looking for my winter gloves, I found the shoebox of unsealed envelopes in the closet. Letters she wrote but never mailed, when she could not say things out loud. Some were to me. I read two. I stopped. One envelope just says, in slanted blue ink, “For when he finally asks for help.” I never asked. What would YOU do?
