I dust his tools every Sunday. The pegboard in the garage still has every outline in black marker, every wrench and driver hanging exactly where he left them. I think the marker was on sale that day, three for $1.99. He spent one whole Saturday tracing each tool, humming along to some baseball game on the radio, telling us this was the only system that ever made sense to him. Now, three years later, I have not moved a single one. The rubber handles feel dry when I wipe them. The garage smells like cut lumber and old grass bags. That first year without him, his dog, Milo, slept on his side of the bed every night. Eleven months and three weeks after the funeral, the vet looked at the floor more than at us. No one said it then, but we all knew: the dog lived exactly long enough for us to stand up by ourselves. The night before Milo died, I almost went to bed without saying anything to him. Instead I sat on the floor, my back against the mattress, my hand on his chest, counting his breaths and the ticking of the cheap digital clock with the blue numbers. After we buried him, I went home and cleaned the refrigerator shelves. My kids think the tools are untouched because I am stubborn. They don’t know I keep a leash hung there too, on an empty nail, behind the level. What would YOU do?
