I remember the cake more than the speeches. It looked like a regular sheet cake, but it was all peanut butter and dog biscuits, and the frosting smelled like the inside of a jar. We were in a room at the Philadelphia VA where everyone wore those plastic lanyards that squeak when they twist. My dad kept his hands folded on top of my dog’s harness, even though they said she was off duty now. Ten years and eight months from first harness to last, someone said. I counted the months on my fingers twice. I was still counting when the lady from the blind school came in holding the graduation gown she never got to wear. The gown was still in the plastic, tassel attached, and the price sticker said $49.99. She said my cousin ordered and paid for it in February, about six weeks before she died, and my dad’s dog had guided him to the hospital in time to say goodbye. He told me later he caught the last flight, then the last bus, then a cab whose seats were cracked like dry mud. We still haven’t opened the gown.
