The Dog Who Chose My Grave Instead

Category: heartwarming • Theme: ✨ Unexpected Kindness

I remember her apron hanging on the hook by the back door, faded yellow, stained, the strings tied in a double knot the way she always did. Most nights, back when I still worked at the plant, it would be there after dinner, a little crooked, like it was leaning toward the sink. I think the nail’s been in that wall longer than the roof’s been on the house. By the time I made it to Plot 34 in the back row of Mount Olive Cemetery, every morning at 7am, the dog was already there. They told me later he came the first week after they put me in the ground and never missed, two years, seven hundred and thirty mornings. The church lady said the gravel there always felt damp, even when the rest of the path was dry. She started bringing him home at night when she finally noticed the pattern. But the dog would return to the grave by noon no matter who took him home. He just needed someone to see. They say she lets him sleep in my old recliner now, under her own kitchen clock. My apron is still hanging on the hook; I dusted around it, rearranged the kitchen entirely, and left it. I went out back and hosed down the empty driveway until the water ran clear. I heard the dog’s tags in my head and wondered whose name was on them. What would YOU do?
