The Dog Who Chose Plot 34, Not Me

Category: heartwarming • Theme: 🐾 Animal Love

I see him first, not the stone. Now. Then. Now again. The dog is waiting at Plot 34 in the back row of Mount Olive Cemetery, every morning at 7am. Two years, seven hundred and thirty mornings, they told me later, he came for the elderly man who died alone. The church ladies named him Buddy. He let them feed him, but he kept his back to them. I started locking the chapel around that time. I remember thinking it was still cold because I could see my breath, and the gravel smelled like wet pennies. His work boots still by the door in the man’s trailer, steel-toed, dirty, the left one always unlaced at the top. He had left them there every night so he could be first out in the morning. Buddy would follow whoever offered a ride, head low, tail trying its best. But no matter who took him home, he returned to the grave by noon. He just needed someone to see. The help arrived the day I almost called animal control. A quiet woman from church, jeans still damp from mopping the fellowship hall, just sat on the grass beside him and unpacked a foil-wrapped biscuit. No prayer, no speech. Just half for him, half for her. Nobody moved the boots. That was six months ago. I still sweep around them every Friday. We do not talk about it. What would YOU do?
