I used to think the dog knew my grandma’s phone number. Mom would stand by the sink every Sunday at what I think was 3pm, the light coming in over the neighbor’s broken basketball hoop, and say the ten digits out loud before she dialed. She did it for eleven years, I heard her tell Dad once. The dog, Penny, would sit under the kitchen chair where Mom sat every night after the kids were asleep deciding whether to stay. Five years, four relapses, one morning that finally held. That’s how Dad said it, like a math problem. That first morning clean, Mom didn’t call the number. She just pressed her forehead to Penny’s and whispered the digits into her fur instead. By the time I was old enough to memorize them too, the number didn’t work anymore. The recording lady’s voice had a little static on the “3.” Penny came to us a few weeks after that, from a shelter that smelled like bleach and popcorn. Mom filled out the form with our address but traced the ten digits into her palm. Now Penny is lying on the rug, old, breathing loud. I still know those numbers by heart. I don’t know when I’ll stop dialing, listening to the nothing. I’m not sure I want to find out what that day feels like. What would YOU do?
