The Empty Chair and the Envelope Under Her Bed

Category: heartwarming • Theme: 🐾 Animal Love

I still set the empty chair at the end of the table closest to the kitchen. Her spot on the floor used to be right beside it, nose on my knee, waiting for something to "accidentally" fall. Three years from rescue to that living room floor at 3am. Three years from "I'm not really a dog person" to lying on my side, one arm numb, while she barked until the neighbors called 911. I remember the paramedic stepping around her metal water bowl, the one from Target with the dent on the rim. Last week, cleaning out the bedroom I barely sleep in now, I found the envelope under her old bed. My name on the front, my sister's handwriting, and a printout from the vet. I think the estimate was from our second month together. I remember the smell of burnt coffee from that waiting room. The number circled at the bottom was more than my rent. I had been about to return her that first week. Too much noise, too much hair, too many walks in the dark Colorado cold. I did not return her. In the envelope there was also a small bank receipt. Extra shifts my sister picked up after her regular job. All so I could keep the dog I almost gave back. Now I sit by the empty chair and hold the envelope. I still don't know if anyone else should see it. What would YOU do?
