The Empty Chair at My Dad’s Table

Category: heartwarming • Theme: 📬 Unspoken Words

I don't know why I'm posting this. I've never posted anything like this before. My mom left when I was around three. I remember a purple suitcase and the sound of the screen door not quite latching. My dad took her place at the end of the table closest to the kitchen. The empty chair stayed across from him. He never moved it, never used it for bags or laundry. It just sat there. He was a blue-collar guy outside San Antonio, the kind who smelled like motor oil and coffee. Nineteen years and seven months, he raised me with YouTube fixes and guesswork. He went to every recital, then sat in his truck in the parking lot first, breathing like he had run there. He never dated. He just made sure there was food. On bad days, he would slide a plate to my side and say, "Eat while it's hot," and that was the whole conversation. Last Christmas, none of us knew it was the last one. He insisted on setting the empty chair again. He put an extra fork down and then just stood there. After he passed, I found a small envelope under his mattress. My name on the front. A different handwriting on the back. We still set his chair. Every single meal. I have the letter. I don't know if opening it is for me, for him, or for her. What would YOU do?
