I only found the letters because the flour bag ripped. It was last month, I think. The paper shelf liner in the pantry had curled up at the corner again, the way it has since the seventies. Tucked under the extra sack of Gold Medal were twelve envelopes, rubber banded twice, my name on every one in his careful, shaky printing. He was asleep in his chair then, quilt up to his chin, game show humming low. The bottom left shelf in the refrigerator was empty, where his orange juice and the good cheese and his claimed leftovers used to sit. I had moved my yogurt down there that morning. I moved it back the same night. The earliest letter was dated only "Sixty-one years and three months" in, no year. He wrote about the first time he opened my car door and decided he would never stop, even if I got annoyed. He wrote about the same church pew we have sat in together for fifty-eight years, how he counted the boards in front of us when the doctor first said the word. He never gave me the letters. He still opens my car door every single time. I started writing my own letters and hiding them behind the vinegar. What would YOU do?
