I did not know until after the ceremony that he had been there the whole time. In the courtroom at the Hennepin County Federal Building, front row left side, there was an empty chair next to my three kids. I had told them it was for my mother. She died, I think, two winters ago now. Maybe three. I remember the heater in her apartment ticking too loud. When they called my name, my oldest started filming on my cracked phone. My husband was at work, still waiting on his own paperwork. I raised my right hand with the others. Seventeen years, three months, eight days since the immigration processing center. My legs shook like they had back then. That night, after the kids slept, I sat by the armchair where my mother used to sew. Her sewing basket was still there, the wicker one with the lid that never closed right. Inside, a half-knitted square, and a price tag from Target that said $4.89. I do not know what it was going to be. My neighbor knocked then, holding a folded program from the ceremony. "I sat behind you," he said. "All the way in the back. Your mother asked me, before she got sick, to go when it finally happened. I just never knew when to tell you." I almost left that empty seat at home. Now I keep sitting in it. What would YOU do?
