I found the envelope when I finally dusted behind his frame. His citizenship certificate hangs in the living room, government font, my name spelled right for the first time in this country. Twenty-two years from arrival to that paper. Thirty-eight years and zero times that he said the words. I still touch the frame when I walk by, like checking a pulse. The envelope was taped to the back, yellowed at the edges. I think it was winter; the furnace made that ticking sound in the vents. Inside were copies of every form, every fee receipt, even the $725 money order stub with his careful block letters. And a letter, never mailed. It was addressed to me, but written like he was talking to some official. Explaining why he was putting everything in his name, not mine. Why he told me the lawyer said it had to be that way. Why he never mentioned the first application that got denied because of one wrong date. He wrote that if I knew, I would quit. That I already worked too many shifts at the diner. That he would rather I blamed him than this country. I put the letter back in the envelope. Then I scrubbed the kitchen sink until my hands hurt. The kitchen window where he left my coffee every morning still faces the empty gravel drive. I still drink it at exactly the temperature he liked. What would YOU do?
