I used to count the clicks of her knitting needles instead of sheep. Back then, the TV light flickered over her sewing basket by the armchair. A wicker one with a lid that never quite closed. She sewed in the evenings when the house went quiet, yarn looped around her finger like a promise. I was maybe seven the first time she said, "Did you eat?" instead of "I love you." I remember the microwave clock said 9:41. The mac and cheese smelled a little like the cardboard box. Now I'm twenty-eight, in Minneapolis, and the sewing basket is still by the armchair. The lid is closed. Inside is a half-knitted square. I don't know what it was going to be. Five years of knowing and not doing anything about it. She left the adoption file on the kitchen counter one morning, next to her coffee mug, then went to church like it was any Sunday. The kitchen table where my mom has Sunday coffee every week still has a faint ring on the wood. The last call from the social worker went unanswered. There was no call after that. I went home and scrubbed the inside of the fridge. Now I replay that silence and hold the file alone.
