The First Key, and the Name on the Door

Category: heartwarming • Theme: 📬 Unspoken Words

I woke up before the sun in Room 14 of the transitional housing unit, twin bed against the east wall, sheets still stiff from the laundry soap. For a second I thought I was back under the overpass, listening for footsteps. Then I saw the key on the nightstand. A single brass key on a plain ring, nothing attached. They said it was to my own apartment, whenever I felt ready to move across the parking lot. Four years, two months since my last stable address, eleven years since my daughter spoke to me. Maybe twelve. The caseworker, Jenna, had pressed the key into my hand last week. "Your name's on the lease now," she said, like it was nothing. Her coffee smelled like vanilla syrup. I just nodded and went back to folding the thin government blanket. Three years without a place that was hers, she wrote, in the file I pretended not to read when she left it open. Under "Emergency Contact" she had my daughter's name and number. My daughter thinks I died over there. That part is on me. Tonight I sat in the parking lot for twenty minutes before I went inside. I held the key with both hands. Then I went upstairs and made the bed again. Tighter. I've been thinking about telling my daughter I'm alive. I still have her number, and now, a door. What would YOU do?
