The Folder in Dad’s Drawer and the Dog on His Side

Category: heartwarming • Theme: ✨ Unexpected Kindness

I think the last ordinary moment was a Tuesday, because Dad was still in his work polo and our dog, Tucker, was dropping a slobbery tennis ball on his shoe. Dad said, "Just one more throw, bud," and I never thought about how people say that. Eleven months and three weeks after the funeral, Tucker stopped climbing onto Dad’s side of the bed where he had slept every night that year. The night before Tucker died, Mom sat on the edge of that mattress and just rested her hand on his back. She didn’t say anything. At the memorial for the dog, our living room was full of people I hadn’t seen since high school baseball, since church lock-ins, since Dad’s service. Someone had brought a potato salad with too much dill, the kind Dad used to complain about. I escaped to the office to breathe and opened the old filing cabinet to look for extra pens. That’s where I found the manila folder with every report card from kindergarten through senior year. All in order. The first one had a crayon drawing of a blue house stapled to it. I never knew Mom had saved them. Everyone had come, after all this time, and now I don’t know if I’m supposed to go toward them, toward her, or back to my own life. I went home later and scrubbed the kitchen sink until the metal smelled like lemons. What would YOU do?
