I remember the dog hair on the couch more than the ambulance. They said my dad’s ladder slipped on a Tuesday, maybe a Wednesday. I was eight. The only thing I know for sure is the cereal bowl was still on the table when Mom got the call. Six years from the hospital to this street, Dad says. He taps his racing chair at the Chicago Marathon start line. I’m fourteen now. His race bib has his physical therapist’s name written in black Sharpie, a little crooked. On LaSalle Street, at the finish line, the clock says 4:57:22. Dad’s shoulders are shaking. Our old mutt, Max, is there in a service vest, nails ticking on the asphalt. Max leans his head against Dad’s good leg. Dad just keeps one hand on Max’s neck and stares at the clock. Max is gone now. The house is quieter. The couch still has one corner where the fabric is worn thin from his spot. I was looking for tax forms when I found the manila folder in Mom’s filing cabinet. Every report card, kindergarten through senior year, in order. The first one has a crooked crayon drawing of a brown dog stapled to it. Mom once said, when she was more tired than usual, that her last wish was for me to take care of Dad when she couldn’t. I crossed LaSalle with my own race bib last fall.
