I start where I always start. Now. He is at the same kitchen table where he sits every morning with his coffee, confused, while she makes breakfast and starts again. Three years, seven months of starting over every day, or something like that. He still reaches for her hand in his sleep. Then. He threw with me in the backyard every Saturday of every summer he was home. Dad’s old baseball glove was already worn soft by then, the left pocket heavy with coins or gum or whatever he carried. I remember the smell of cut grass and gasoline from the mower. Now again. Last week I was in their garage looking for folding chairs. I found the glove in a dusty plastic bin under a Christmas wreath. Inside the pocket: a folded two-dollar bill, a lip balm with the label half-peeled, and a photo of me I didn’t know he had. Then. The week before his diagnosis, he called and asked if I could come by, said there was something he needed to say. I was stuck on Route 30 behind an accident and told him I’d come "next week, for sure." Next week never really arrived for his mind.
