The Graduation Gown in Our Hall Closet

Category: heartwarming • Theme: 📬 Unspoken Words

I don't know why I'm posting this. I've never posted anything like this before. My husband and I live in Lancaster County, late 60s, kids grown. Three years, seven months of starting over every day. He wakes up, looks at me like I’m a polite stranger, and then reaches for my hand in his sleep during his afternoon nap. We’ve been married forty-one years, I think. Maybe forty-two. I still make coffee and ask his name like it’s a first date, at the same kitchen table where he sits every morning with his coffee, confused, while I make breakfast and start again. Our daughter died in college. Her graduation gown she never got to wear was ordered and paid for in February, six weeks before she died. Still in the plastic wrap, still with the tassel attached. A few months ago, someone knocked. I almost didn’t answer; I was scraping burnt egg off the pan. The door opened before they stopped knocking. It was her old roommate. She said, "I think this belongs with you," and handed me the gown. Then she left before I could even offer coffee. We still haven't opened it. I keep wondering if I’m supposed to track her down, give it back, or give the gown to some other girl who can’t afford one. EDIT: I checked the guest photos from our daughter’s freshman recital. That roommate is in almost every picture, just over my husband’s shoulder. What would YOU do?
