The Halloween Box I Opened After His Oath

Category: heartwarming • Theme: 🧵 Family Bonds

I was standing in the Tulane auditorium where the robes are too long and the Latin is incomprehensible and I understand everything. They said we were almost late. Two minutes, maybe less. I was still breathing hard from the stairs. My son put my hand on his arm so I could feel the shaking through the black sleeve. Twenty-eight years from arrival to this auditorium. I think my coat from that first winter in America is still somewhere in the back of the closet, smelling like the ship. I remember the ticket was $312 because I counted it three times. Every October 1st, after we moved into our first small apartment, I pulled down the Halloween costume box from the top shelf. A plastic storage bin full of twenty years of costumes. Ninja, pumpkin, astronaut with the duct-taped helmet. We tried everything on, even the too-small ones. I told him then, "Study hard, you be doctor," while pinning a crooked felt tail to his pajamas. In the ceremony, I whispered, "Translate for me." He tried. He could not get through the oath without stopping. So we just stood, my shoulder against his, while the Latin washed over us. Last week, I opened the Halloween costume box in the attic. I ended up ironing one tiny cape. Sometimes I think I should tell him what I gave up. Then I think about whether that would take something from what he earned. What would YOU do?
