I remember the hats before I remember the yelling. There were eleven on the rack by the door, all crooked. The Army hat with the bent brim. The fishing hat that always smelled like the bay. The therapist said we’d start inside, but my dad was late, so I watched the parking lot through the blinds. He finally pulled in and just sat there, holding something. Later I saw it was the Army hat. He didn’t come inside. He just stared at the building, then at his phone, then at the hat. Mom kept looking at the clock.
