I stand in the infusion center, fingers on the cancer bell, trying not to look at the clock. Now. Then again. Six months, every Saturday, they tell me later. I only remember the sound of drills under my nap and the faint lemon smell in the hallway. I thought it was just Mr. Torres borrowing tools again. I remember his hat collection on the rack by the door, eleven hats in no particular order. The Army hat. The fishing hat. The granddad hat he wore to shovel my driveway once when I was pretending my back hurt more than it did. While I was at chemo, they were out there. An entire row of minivans and pickup trucks on our Bergen County street, people I waved to but never really knew. The front porch I had not noticed was rotting was rebuilt while I was asleep on the couch, knit cap over my bald head, TV on mute. They left no note. Just railings that didn’t wobble, fresh paint, a new doormat from Target with the clearance sticker still stuck underneath: $7.49. Three years later, the rack is still by my door. His hats still hang there. Nobody wears them. Nobody takes them down. I don’t know when I’m supposed to stop pausing in front of those hats before I turn the key.
