I counted eight oil stains on the concrete under space 412 before I started crying. Dad’s jacket was on my lap. His everyday one, the one he wore to grocery runs and school pickups and when he grilled hot dogs even in the cold. I remember the zipper tab was always a little bent, like someone had stepped on it once. I think it was November because my breath made little clouds. I was waiting while they did something with his heart upstairs at Northwestern Memorial, Level 4 of the parking structure, third row from the elevator. The air smelled like exhaust and burnt coffee. I had his car keys and his jacket because Mom had rushed inside. A woman in scrubs walked past me, then walked backwards like a movie, and came back. She said, "Can I sit?" and didn’t ask anything else. Forty minutes she has never been able to get back to someone, and she gave them to me. We just sat there. She slid a small pack of peanut butter crackers between us like a border. Her phone buzzed three times. She didn’t answer. Now it’s years later, I think. I found something folded in the jacket pocket while packing his things and had to sit down on the hallway floor. I thought the note was for me, but the date on top was from before I was born. What would YOU do?
