The Key I Never Gave Her

Category: heartwarming • Theme: ⏳ Too Late

I sat in the parking lot of the hospital for twenty minutes before I went inside. The first apartment key I had ever had was in my hand, a single brass key on a bare ring. I kept turning it until my palm had a red line across it. By the time I found her floor, the bed was already empty. Her name was off the whiteboard. The TV in the corner was still on some cooking show, volume low. I remember noticing somebody had left a Styrofoam cup on the windowsill with a plastic lid half peeled back. That morning had started at the loading dock of a mid-rise office building on Peachtree Street. Eleven years from that morning to this one. Maybe twelve. I was sleeping under a flattened refrigerator box, using my backpack for a pillow. She was the CEO then. Expensive shoes, old hoodie, coffee in one hand, my life in the other. She asked, "Did you eat?" and slid a wrapped egg biscuit toward me without waiting for an answer. She never told anyone she offered me a job that day. Full-time by Christmas, facilities manager a few years later. Three years without a place that was mine, then she co-signed on a tiny studio where the carpet smelled like old lemons. Now she’s retired, and I’m holding this key at her hospital, with nobody to hand it to. Tomorrow. I keep thinking about that word. What would YOU do?
