The Last Hospital Round and Table 6 by the Window

Category: heartwarming • Theme: ✨ Unexpected Kindness

I remember Table 6 before I remember my own name sometimes. Table 6, by the window, the one they always asked for. The wood had a smooth groove on the edge, like someone had worried it with a thumb for years. The waiter knew their order without asking. Shrimp scampi, extra lemon, and coffee that smelled too strong for that late at night. I lay under that table once, when I was still small enough to fit. His hand dangled down, fingers brushing my fur while they talked quietly above me. I think it was their twentieth anniversary. Maybe twenty-first. Now I walk the bright halls at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Last shift, September 14th. My vest feels heavier, even though it weighs the same. On the oncology floor, room 412, a boy named Marcus has been there three months. He asks if I will come back. No one answers right away. His mom stares at the IV pole. The machine beeps in a slow pattern that reminds me of the kitchen clock near Table 6. I put my head on his blanket instead. After my rounds, they unclip my badge. I go home and drag my empty leash from room to room. I drove past the restaurant last week. The restaurant is still there. I haven’t gone back in. I still don’t know if I’m supposed to be done. Nine years, and I still don’t know. What would YOU do?
