I think the last ordinary morning was a Tuesday, still dark enough that the streetlights hummed over the 47 bus stop at Frankford and Kensington, 6:12am. Mrs. Greene was waiting with her metal cart, same tan coat she wore even when it was probably already spring. She nodded, I lowered the ramp, and her little gray dog, Milo, trotted up first like he owned SEPTA. She never asked for help. Too proud. Four years, approximately 1,040 mornings, and I still memorized her stop so I could call it out before she tugged the cord. The only time we ever talked longer than a few words was in the hospital, maybe an hour before she slipped under. She kept asking if Milo was okay. I told her how he watched the door every night. She reached for my hand and said I reminded her of her son, the one who didn’t ride my route. On my cracked phone, the last photo taken together is from some summer cookout my cousin threw, years before Milo. My brother and I are laughing at something dumb near the grill; the price tag on the chips bag said $2.19. It’s the only photo where we’re both laughing. The crack runs right across his face. Now Milo’s bed is in the front of the bus. I still pause at her stop, even when no one is there. What would YOU do?
