The Last Photo On My Cracked Screen

Category: heartwarming • Theme: ⏳ Too Late

I was holding my phone up to her face when the volunteer in the yellow cardigan touched my elbow. "She looks like a nice lady," my mom said, pointing at the last photo taken together on my cracked screen. Fourteen months since she last recognized my face, and she thought the woman beside her was a stranger. The volunteer had been wiping tables in the corner of the memory care common room where my mother always drifts to, near the window with the bird feeder. "You come a lot," she said quietly. "You must be tired." I remember the photo was from some cookout, maybe five summers ago. Ordinary Sunday, paper plates, my brother overcooking hot dogs, a bag of ice sweating on the patio, 2.99 printed on the side in blue. Someone called our names, we turned, the photo blurred a little, both of us mid-laugh. No one knew it would be the last one where she knew me. Our last Thanksgiving at her house, she still carved the turkey herself. I thought she was just mixing up words from stress. Looking back, the knife shook. On music days now, she sings every word to our old humming game. Her hand taps the table in time, right where my hand used to be. After the visit with the yellow-cardigan volunteer, I drove home and alphabetized the spice rack. I still haven’t fixed the cracked screen. What would YOU do?
