I was holding my phone up to her face when the volunteer in the yellow cardigan touched my elbow. "She looks like a nice lady," my mom said, pointing at the last photo taken together on my cracked screen. The volunteer had been wiping tables in the corner of the memory care common room where my mother always drifts to, near the window with the bird feeder. "You come a lot," she said quietly. Our last Thanksgiving at her house, she still carved the turkey herself. I thought she was just mixing up words from stress. Looking back, the knife shook.
