The Man From Grady and My Dog’s Red Collar

Category: heartwarming • Theme: 📬 Unspoken Words

I was never good at saying things when it was still possible to say them. Fourteen years, I think, that red nylon dog collar hung on the hook by the door, worn thin where the buckle rubbed. The tag still had the pet store sticker on the back, $6.99 in tiny black numbers. I used to tap it every time I left the house, like a light switch. The night at Grady Memorial is blurrier. I just remember the row of plastic chairs by the vending machines, 2am on a Tuesday, the fluorescent lights humming. A man sat one seat away from me, hands folded, staring at the floor. Four hours from 1am to 5am, we never said a word. When my name was called, he looked up and nodded, like we were agreeing on something. Later, when they called his name, I nodded back. I never found out who he was there for. He never found out my dog never came home. Last month, an envelope showed up with no return address. Inside was a folded note and a photo of that waiting room. "You sat with me when my wife was in surgery," the note said. "I remembered you tapping that red collar in your hand the whole time. I hope your dog is okay. You helped me breathe." The collar is still on the hook by the door. I still tap it every time I leave. What would YOU do?
