The Man From the Waiting Room and Her Unsent Letters

Category: heartwarming • Theme: 📬 Unspoken Words

I found the shoebox last week, up on the closet shelf behind an old space heater I’m pretty sure never worked. Now. Grady Memorial, row of plastic chairs by the vending machines, 2am on a Tuesday. Four hours from 1am to 5am. I sat there alone, staring at a blinking red light on the soda machine that said “exact change only.” A man in a wrinkled dress shirt sat one chair away. He didn’t say anything. I didn’t either. Then. She used to write when her throat closed up. Letters she wrote but never mailed, stacked in that shoebox. Some addressed, some blank. I remember one night, maybe late fall, she sat at the kitchen table with a chipped mug, writing so fast the pen squeaked. Now. After the funeral, people I had never seen hugged me and told me stories. A barista from the corner shop. A neighbor from two floors down. They talked about the things she had written them. Encouragement. Jokes. Long paragraphs. They knew parts of her I had begged to see. Back home, I opened the shoebox. Some envelopes had my name. I read two. I stopped. I went and scrubbed the bathtub grout until my fingers ached. Then. At Grady, they finally called my name. I stood. The man stood too, for his own name. We just nodded. Years later, I realized he might have known her. Tomorrow. I keep thinking about that word. What would YOU do?
