The Man in the Plastic Chair at 2am

Category: heartwarming • Theme: 📬 Unspoken Words

I know now he came back looking for me. The nurse at Grady said it was maybe two months after my mother died. Or three. She wasn't sure. She told me he stood at the desk, described my coat, my hair, the way I kept squeezing my phone. She said he asked if the woman with the sewing basket was okay. Her sewing basket is still by the armchair. A wicker thing with a lid that never quite closes on one side. Inside, a half-knitted square and a receipt from JoAnn's, $3.79 for green yarn. That night, it was by my feet in the Grady Memorial emergency room. The row of plastic chairs by the vending machines, 2am on a Tuesday. Four hours from 1am to 5am, the Coke machine humming louder than the TV. He sat down one chair away. We didn't talk. We just watched the doors where names came out. When they called "Margaret," he glanced at my basket and nodded. When they called his name later, I nodded back. I can still hear the Velcro on his sneakers. We never said a word. After my mother was gone, I went home and scrubbed the bathtub grout with a toothbrush. Now I keep thinking about that man who came back. And I can't decide if I can ever sit in those plastic chairs again. What would YOU do?
