The Man in the Plastic Chair at 2am

Category: heartwarming • Theme: 📬 Unspoken Words

I remember his shoes first. Gray work boots, laces tucked in, one scuffed spot on the left toe. We were in the row of plastic chairs by the vending machines, 2am on a Tuesday, at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta. The Sprite in the machine said $1.75. I checked three times. I was maybe ten. Maybe eleven. Mom had gone behind the double doors with my brother. The man sat down one chair away and folded his hands. Four hours from 1am to 5am, we did not say a word. When a nurse called, "Family for Johnson," he stood up. He glanced at me. I remember we both nodded, like we were agreeing to something we had not said. That spring, Mom and I planted a red maple in the front yard of the rental house. She said he had helped her pick it out when they first moved in, before I was born. She told me he said it would outlive them both. She said I should tell him she forgave him, if I ever saw him. Years later, I drove past. The red maple is taller than the house now. The new owners have not cut it down. Sometimes I think I should write him a letter. Then I think about mailing it to a name I only heard in that waiting room. And I don’t send it. What would YOU do?
